Better Placement Status

This feature allows the seller to purchase a bump in category browsing result placement for their listing. This would allow the seller's listing to stay towards the top of the default category browsing results. This feature also allows you to set an automatic rotation schedule for "better placed listings" so that each "better placed listing" has the same shot at display at the top of current "better placed listings".

Better placement status does not affect display within featured modules. Featured module results are chosen completely at random from the available pool of featured listings.

Where Do You Enable and Manage This Feature

This feature must be turned on site-wide within the following admin tool page:

LISTING SETUP > LISTING EXTRAS

Once enabled within the above admin tool page you'll see other controls within that same section to allow further control over that feature. Without enabling the better placement rotation feature your "better placed listings" will display at the top but among the "better placed listings" at the top of category results there will be a "fixed placed by order". To shake up this fixed order you should enable the better placement rotation feature.

After enabling site-wide in the above admin tool page you must then enable that feature within each price plan's admin tool you wish to allow access to this feature.

Within LISTING SETUP > LISTING EXTRAS

Enable Better Placement

Turns on use of this feature site wide. But then must be turned on within each price plan for users in that price plan to have access to this feature.

Checking the box to enable will allow the users to put their listings(classifieds & auctions) at the top of the browsed categories when visitors are browsing the site. The "better placed" listings(classifieds & auctions) come first in any browse results returned from a category. The better placed listings(classifieds & auctions) themselves are arranged by the date the listing was placed (from most recent to oldest), unless better placement rotation is enabled (see below settings). The price for this added feature will be set by the pricing plan attached to that user through his/her User Group association.

<tip c n>NOTE: The browsing categories tables on your site offer a "sort" feature that allows the visitor to sort the table results based upon the column header they selected. Performing this function automatically overrides any listings(classifieds & auctions) that happen to have the "better placement" feature applied to them. When sorting by a column, the better placement sorting becomes the secondary sorting critera1). It is a "true sort" feature.</tip>

Enable Better Placement Rotation

Checking this box will allow listings(classifieds & auctions) that have better placement "rotate" the listing order, so that what listings(classifieds & auctions) are "at the top" are rotated out on a periodic basis. This feature is designed for sites with long lasting classifieds or auctions, it is not as useful for sites that have short lasting listings(classifieds & auctions), as those listings(classifieds & auctions) won't have much time to be rotated before they expire.

The intent of this feature, is for classifieds and auctions that last a long time (for instance, Real Estate classifieds), to be rotated so that they will show on the front page for the category they are in even if they have been placed a long time ago. Without this rotation, the listing would move further and further down in listing results for a category, the longer it sits there and the more new classifieds and auctions are placed that get displayed before it, since by default they are sorted by the date the classified is placed. A classified that lists an entire year, for example, might be on page 10 near the end of its duration, and get hardly any views the older it gets. The rotation will rotate such a listing back to the top of a category so it continues to get exposure even as other newer listings(classifieds & auctions) are placed on top of it.

Rotate 1 listing per...

Only available when Enable Better Placement Rotation is checked.

Possible values for this setting:

  • Terminal Category 2) - Rotation happens at the terminal category level. Every time better placement rotation happens, a single listing in every terminal category will be moved from the bottom of the better placement listings(classifieds & auctions), to the top of better placement listings(classifieds & auctions), for that terminal category. The rotation will not order listings(classifieds & auctions) as expected when displaying results "above" the terminal category level, for that reason we recommend to only use this option on sites that do not show category results for a parent category and several sub-categories3).
  • Entire Site - Rotation happens at the top level, not at the terminal category level. Every time better placement rotation happens, a single listing for the entire site will be moved from the bottom of the better placement listings(classifieds & auctions), to the top of better placement listings(classifieds & auctions). This is recommended for sites with many different sub-categories that display listings(classifieds & auctions) from sub-categories inside the parent category.

<tip c n>Note: With using Entire Site, each better placement rotation will only seem to rotate classified or auction results for all categories, and results for the category and parent categories that the listing that was rotated is in. This means a listing might take longer to get rotated to the top of the list, but it also means that classified and auction results that are pulled from multiple sub-categories, are being rotated smoothly and accurately.</tip>

Interval - Rotate listings(classifieds & auctions) every...

Only available when Enable Better Placement Rotation is checked.

This controls how often better placement rotation occurs. The default value is to perform one rotation per day, meaning once per day, the listing at the bottom of the better placement listings(classifieds & auctions) will be rotated to be displayed at the top of the list, and the rest of the better placement listings(classifieds & auctions) will be moved down one. Note that better placement rotation is performed as a cron job, running on the interval set for this setting.

Rotate Listings Now

Only available when Enable Better Placement Rotation is checked and settings are saved.

Use this button to manually force the better placement rotation to happen now. It will run the cron job that is responsible for rotating the better placement listings(classifieds & auctions). It is the equivalent of clicking on the [Test Run] link for the better_placement_rotation cron job, in the admin on the page Site Setup > Cron Jobs. When using the button, you will see the debug output for the listing rotation. The interval will then start from the time when you clicked the button.

1)
The better placement listings(classifieds & auctions) would appear above listings(classifieds & auctions) without better placement for any listings(classifieds & auctions) that have the exact same value for the column being sorted. If listings(classifieds & auctions) have different values for the column being sorted, the column sorting overrides the better placement sorting.
2)
The terminal category is the "furthest down" category the listing is in. In other words, when viewing the listing details, the terminal category is the right-most category listed in the category breadcrumb.
3)
We recommend using this setting on sites that do not have many sub-categories, or sites that only show listing results at the terminal category level.
