There are additional configurations just for the email field within the software. This page covers them.

  • The email attached to the listing is used to send all "contact seller" feature emails to.
  • The software can allow the client to customize the email used as the recipient for "contact seller" feature emails.
  • The email is ALWAYS set for a listing
  • The email field will ALWAYS appear in the place a listing process if the client is not logged in AND you allow anonymous listings to be placed.
  • The email field will ALWAYS appear in the place a listing process if the client is not logged in AND you allow JIT registrations.
  • The "expose email" configuration is not recommended for sites where listing detail pages are open to the public as that will open your site up to "email scrapers" and those emails subject to tons of spam emails.

Hide/Expose Email/Contact Seller in listing details

Admin Tool Configuration

These configurations can be found in the following admin tool:

LISTING SETUP > FIELDS TO USE

and can be made on a category by category basis within the category specific field configuration feature if you like. They are shown in the following screenshot:

Within that screenshot are:

  1. Allow the seller to hide the contact seller link - You can allow the client to hide the contact seller link within the listing details page of their details. This gives the seller control over hiding the contact seller link within each of their listings individually. They can choose to hide the contact seller in specific
  2. Allow the seller the ability to show their email directly within their listings - This allows the seller the choice to display their email in their listings details pages directly

<tip c w>We do not advocate displaying the email address directly in the listing details page. This opens your site up to email harvesters that traverse the Internet looking for emails to harvest and eventually spam. If you allow the email to be exposed your clients will most likely be spammed heavily and soon. Many clients of our clients create emails for every site they register and if so could narrow the spammed address to one site…yours. Those spammed clients could specifically call you out for the spamming when you may not be the culprit. If you want to expose the email address in the listing details page we suggest you only do so if your listing details pages are:

  • hidden from public display to all those not logged into the site using the hide fields feature described here
  • or by subscription where your clients can only view the listing details page if they have a current site subscription to the site setup through the SITE SETUP > BROWSING SETTINGS > REQUIRE SUBSCRIPTION TO VIEW LISTINGS admin setting.</tip>

Client Side Choices

The above mentioned admin tool configurations produce the following options in the place a listing process listing details collection section:

Within that screenshot you'll see:

  1. hide the contact seller link - the default state for this is to display the contact seller link in the listing details page. The seller can choose to hide that link by checking that box. This is a listing by listing configuration.
  2. expose email in listing details page - The default for this is no and the seller must check the yes option to expose their email in this listing only. This is a listing by listing configuration.
