12) Geographic Region Setup

This feature is important to setup if you anticipate using any region specific filtering within the site.

Highlights of this feature:

  • controls all regions used within the software in a hierarchical manner. The display of a subregion choice is dependent on the parent region choice. If you choose a specific country you can set the software to only show the specific states/provinces from that country
  • We've pre entered many country and state/province combinations in the software by default but you may find you need to configure some country subregions
  • The region structure you setup here is the region structure that will be used in the geographic navigation addon if you decide to use that feature
  • You can set taxes or flat fee charges by region within this admin tool. Taxes and fees will be cumulative if you set a tax/fee for a parent and sub region and a client
  • You can add regions in bulk if you have many to insert and have those regions in a list of some kind. You only need to navigate to the parent region you wish to insert them into, click "bulk add" and paste your list into the popup.

Where are the admin tools to manage regions within the software?

Regions and their subregions are managed here in the admin tool:

GEOGRAPHIC SETUP > REGIONS

Once you are at the above admin tool you'll see the following:

Within that screenshot you'll see:

  1. Mass edit button
  2. Mass move button
  3. Mass delete button
  4. The label for the region that will appear on the client side within any feature that displays a region
  5. The number of live listings currently attached to that region in the site
  6. Icons that show whether that region is enabled and in use or not. Clicking this icon changes the status of that region without needing to edit that region
  7. This is the abbreviation that will be used for that region within any address display
  8. This is the unique name given to that region and will be what appears in the subdomain if you use the subdomain feature within the geographic navigation addon
  9. This column shows any taxes setup for that region
  10. This is the display order for each region and determines the order that regions display within any region choice feature on the client side. This can be edited in the regions details. If two or more regions have the same display order those regions will be ordered alphabetically

You can set the labels used for each region level per language for the whole site within the following admin tool:

GEOGRApHIC SETUP > LEVELS

The country and state choices within the region selection automatically by default populate the country and state fields in the user registration data and the listing data.

You can enable region level, force a region level to be a required choice, allow editing of their choice after placement and control where these field appear within the Geographic Regions section of the following admin tool:

LISTING SETUP > FIELDS TO USE

Things to know when managing the Geographic Region feature

  • We suggest using the country and state/province levels exactly as they are in the default configuration. Those levels are set at the code level to overwrite the country and state/province fields in both the user data and the listing.
  • Even if you are focused on a small regional level smaller than a state/province we still say use the country and state/province levels. You would set country and state to the one country and state/province your region is in. If you do that then your clients will not need to select country and state/province as those will be assumed as choices in the system.
  • If there is only one region to choose at a certain level that choice will automatically be assumed by the software and chosen by the system.
  • If using tax/fees attached to a region that tax will be charged to the seller when placing an auction or classified.
  • If charging tax/fees by region you will need to require all region level choices to at least below the lowest level those taxes/fees are set in. Note these taxes/fee go by the region selected within the user data and not the listing data.
  • Taxes/fees set within the geographic regions are only charge to the seller doing business with the site (listing placement, renewal, upgrade…etc) and are not charged between the buyer and seller.
  • If you use the subdomain feature of the geographic navigation sub-domain feature you have the ability to set what that sub-domain value will be for each sub-domain or allow the software to set that for you. Look to the geographic navigation addon sub-domain setup here
