Admin Page: Site Setup > Browsing Settings
It is extremely important to understand that many of these settings ONLY apply to features displayed through the use of the {body_html} tag. Depending upon how your templates are set up, you may be using MODULES to display certain content. Those MODULES will NOT be affected by the settings on this page of the admin. To edit a module's settings, you will need to access that module directly in the modules section of the admin.
Setting Added in Version 7.4.0
This setting has 2 checkboxes, either check or un-check each box to turn on/off showing the category navigation in that location as part of the {body_html}. This is useful if you simply do not wish to show navigation at all in one place or the other, or if you would prefer to use one of the category navigation modules instead of having the category navigation as part of the {body_html}.
The 2 options to check/uncheck are:
<tip c n>If changing category navigation settings in this section do not seem to have an effect on category navigation browsing on your client side (after refreshing your browser) you will need to find the category navigation module actually displaying that category navigation and make the change within that admin tool. Those modules are managed here within the admin tool:
PAGE MODULES > BROWSING > CATEGORY NAVIGATION </tip>
This setting turns "on" and "off" the display of the category navigation on the pages of your site that are using the {body_html} tag within the template assigned to that page. The category navigation can be displayed above the normal browsing results if this setting is set to "yes". This affects the display the current categories and subcategories displayed above listing results tables on your browsing pages.
<tip c n>So if changing category navigation settings in this section do not seem to have an effect on category navigation browsing on your client side (after refreshing your browser) you will need to find the category navigation module actually displaying that category navigation and make the change within that admin tool. Those modules are managed here within the admin tool:
PAGE MODULES > BROWSING > CATEGORY NAVIGATION </tip>
<tip c w>NOTE: If set to yes you can also designate a caching time in the time to cache category listings(classifieds & auctions) while browsing setting below.</tip>
If you choose to display the normal category navigation (displayed through the {body_html} tag) you can turn "off" and "on" the display of the category count through this control. Remember that this setting will not have any affect on any Category Navigation Modules that you may be using.
<tip c n>There are more than the above places the display of the category count next to a category name in the category navigation because there is more ways to display the category navigation than by the above setting. Each category navigation module has its own controls for displaying the category count within the category navigation they display. If for example you want to remove/display the category count for the home page of the default design you will need to go to a specific category navigation module we use within the default design. Go to the following in the admin tool to control that:
PAGE MODULES > BROWSING > CATEGORY NAVIGATION > Main Category Navigation 1
The above can change if you have made changes to the default design and use a different category navigation module. The point is how you affect the category navigation is how you display it. In the default design the setting mentioned in this page in the admin tool will affect the category navigation of the category browsing…again unless you have changed the design to use a category navigation module to display that category navigation.</tip>
Choose the sequence to display the category count. You have various self-explanatory options that allow you to display the classifieds count first, the auctions count first, etc.
This setting allows you to display/ not display a category’s sub-categories listings(classifieds & auctions) within the current category. If you have a motors category with subcategories of trucks and cars. If this setting is set to yes the trucks and cars listings(classifieds & auctions) will appear in the motors category when you are viewing it. If set to no the trucks listings(classifieds & auctions) will only appear in the trucks category and not in the motors category also….same would go for the listings(classifieds & auctions) in the cars category.
This setting controls the number of columns used to display the main categories when they are displayed on the home page. This only affects the display of the main categories if the display category navigation is set to yes and if the {body_html} is used through the template assigned on the home page.
<tip c w>NOTE: The {body_html} tag is not used in the default FRONT PAGE TEMPLATE that we supplied to you. Therefore, this setting would have no affect on our template. However, if you inserted your own {body_html} tag into the FRONT PAGE TEMPLATE you would see the category navigation displayed.</tip>
This setting controls the number of columns used to display the categories on the browsing pages. This only affects the display of the sub-categories on pages other than the home page.
Check to yes if you wish to display the category description below the category name when browsing pages.
If set to 'yes' and there are no subcategories to the current category a message will be displayed stating that there are 'no subcategories to display'.
-and-
This setting controls the display of the category tree which displays the categories above the current category. You control whether or not to display the category tree but also whether to display the category tree above, below or above and below the current category’s subcategories.
There are also several category tree navigation modules that can be used to display the category tree in other parts of the template. These category tree modules can enhance the display of the standard category tree display or replace it. Each category tree module can have its own display/css variables but are only useful on the category navigation pages. They can be found here:
PAGE MODULES > BROWSING > CATEGORY TREE DISPLAY MODULES
Note: Setting added in Version 6.0.4
When browsing categories, if the site has Auctions and Classifieds turned on, and turned on for the specific category as well, the classifieds and auctions are displayed in separate "tabs" to make it faster to show just what you are looking for. Turning this setting to "on" will make it so that when it does have "classifieds" tab and "auctions" tab, it also uses an "all" tab, that is the default tab used. This "all" tab shows all listing types.
Note: Setting added in Version 7.1.0beta1
As of version 7.1.0 users can browse categories using 2 different options, either "list" view or "gallery" view. This setting controls which view will show first by default. If you have the setting Display browse view links turned off, this will be the "only view" that is used on the site, there will not be options to change it.
Screenshots of "list view" and "gallery view" to show as examples will be coming once the default gallery templates are complete. 2)
Note: Setting added in Version 7.1.0beta1
If turned on, when browsing categories, it will show 2 links in the top right corner right above the browsing listings, for "List" and "Gallery". This allows the visitor to switch between using the "list view" and "gallery view". The links look something like this:
List | Gallery
Note that it does use the language text. If desired, you can change the text to use an image icon instead.
Note: Setting added in Version 7.1.0beta1
This is the number of columns to show during normal category browsing, when browsing using the gallery view only. The default is to use 1 column but that can be changed to a max of 5 columns.
Note that this only affects the "gallery view", since the list view already has different columns, one column for each field that is set to display during browsing.
Note: Setting added in Version 7.1.0beta1
This controls whether the Sort By: drop-down is displayed or not. The sort by dropdown may look something like this3):
Sort By:
There are 3 options available for this setting:
If you choose to display the photo column while browsing the listings(classifieds & auctions) you can then choose to display either a photo icon (such as a camera) that you set below or display an actual thumbnail image of the first photo uploaded within the listing. If you are concerned about page load times, then the icon is the better choice. The user can still see that a photo is attached but browsing can be sped up considerably.
This is the maximum height and width of the thumbnail image used while browsing. This will only affect the thumbnail size if the thumbnail is displayed while browsing. This will not affect the photo icon. The thumbnail’s width or height dimensions will not exceed the maximums specified but the image will be displayed proportionally.
<tip c n>The image displayed as the thumbnail while browsing categories here is the thumbnail created when uploading to your site. The dimensions of that image are determined in the LISTING SETUP > PHOTO UPLOAD SETTINGS part of the admin tool. The category browsing thumbnail image will simply be a "browser resizing" of the uploaded thumbnail though proportions are kept intact. So if the dimension differences are drastic between the two (browsing image is much bigger than the uploaded image) distortions in the browsing category thumbnail image could happen. </tip>
This is the maximum height and width of the thumbnail image used while browsing the featured listings(classifieds & auctions). This will only affect the thumbnail size if the thumbnail is displayed while browsing featured listings(classifieds & auctions) through the normal pages. This will not affect the photo icon. The thumbnail’s width or height dimensions will not exceed the maximums specified but the image will be displayed proportionally.
Set the time limit on whether to display the new listing icon or not. If a category has a recent listing entered within the time you specify, the new listing icon will appear next to that category’s name within the category navigation. If you do not want to display the new icon set this to no display of new listing icon.
There will be a section of "icons used" for each language set up on your installation. Each icon URL is described below:
"New Listing" Icon URL
If using this feature as indicated by the previous setting, specify the url of the new listing icon you want to use. The icon will appear immediately next to the category name within the category navigation around the site. This is the icon that will be used within all category navigation whether it is within a module or within normal category navigation display.
Note that if you do not wish to use this feature anywhere within the category navigation on your site you only need to empty this field and the feature will be "off".
Also note that each category navigation module has its own specific control to display the new icon within that specific module. So you can use this feature in the specific category navigation you wish it to display while turning it off in other category navigation. If you wish to display in some and not others this field will need to have the "new" icon you wish to use.
"No Photo" Icon URL
Specify the url to an image that you want to display instead of leaving an empty space when the user does not upload a photo with their listing.
"Photo" Icon URL
This is the url of the photo icon you wish to use if you have set the previous display thumbnail photo or photo icon setting to icon. This must be either the absolute url (http://www…..) or the relative link with respect to the top file of the listings(classifieds & auctions) system. This is usually an image of a small camera, or some image to indicate that the user uploaded a photo with their listing.
"Help" Icon URL
Several pages have help links within them. This is the icon used to click on when these help icons need to be displayed. This is the url of the help icon you wish to use. This must be the absolute url (http://www…..) or the relative link with respect to the top file of the listings(classifieds & auctions) system.
"Verified Account" Icon URL
This is displayed next to listing title for any listings(classifieds & auctions) placed by an account that has been verified, and in some places next to or below the username for a verified account. See Verified Account System for more info.
"Verified Account" Icon URL in Listing Details
This is displayed on the listing details page for any listings(classifieds & auctions) placed by an account that has been verified, in the place of the {$verified_account} tag in the listing details template. If that tag is not already in the listing details template4), you will need to add the tag to the template for this icon to show.
"Sold" Icon URL
If an item has sold, but the seller does not want to remove the item from the site yet, they can access their listing within their "My Active Listings" page and designate the status of their listing to "sold". When they do, the image you specify in this field will show up on the Listing Display Page next to the title of the listing.
Turning "on" the sold image for a listing should also stop listing expiration notices for that listing.
"Buy Now" Icon URL
Use this field to indicate the image that you want displayed when a seller uses the buy now function when placing their listing.
"Reserve Met" Icon URL
Use this field to indicate the image that you want displayed when the reserve price for a particular listing has received a bid that exceeds the seller’s reserve price.
"No Reserve" Icon URL
Use this field to indicate the image that you want displayed when the reserve price for a particular listing has not been established by the seller.
<tip c w>Note: Setting removed in version 7.3.0 as it now uses CSS in the new responsive design.</tip>
Specify the width and height (in pixels) of the WYSIWYG editor used to enter listing descriptions. The WYSIWYG editor must be set to "yes" in order for these settings to take affect. You can turn on/off the WYSIWYG editor (some editions refer to it is a 'rich text editor') within this menu:
LISTING SETUP > GENERAL SETTINGS
Specify the width and height (in Columns/Rows) of the TextArea editor used to enter listing descriptions. The WYSIWYG editor must be set to "no" in order for these settings to take affect. You can turn on/off the WYSIWYG editor (some editions refer to it is a 'rich text editor') within this menu:

This setting determines the number of listings(classifieds & auctions) that will be displayed on any given page of browsing results when browsing for listings(classifieds & auctions) by category.
This setting determines the number of featured listings(classifieds & auctions) that will be displayed if you choose to display featured listings(classifieds & auctions) within the normal category results. This setting does not affect the number of listings(classifieds & auctions) displayed within the featured listings(classifieds & auctions) modules. Each of those modules have their own individual controls for the number of listings(classifieds & auctions) to display and must be set within each modules controls.
This will only affect the sub category browsing links if display category navigation is set to yes. This can greatly improve page load times if you have several categories to display. The category browsing results are saved for the amount of time that you set here. The results are rebuilt once the age of the previous results has been reached. The problem is the category count is included in the cached version…the category count will not renew until the new cached copy is rebuilt.
You can choose to use the default search form located on the search page or choose to create one of your own. If you use the default search form, it is a dynamic form that pre-populates with search criteria fields (category questions, optional site wide fields) automatically depending on which category the user was browsing when they clicked the search button.
Or you can create your own html search form. If you wish to follow the instructions within the create your own search form tutorial.
An advanced feature of the Enterprise software is that it allows you to specify a different Template for each Category Search Page. This means that you can disable the default search page using this setting, and set up a different search form (would require a template for each category's fields) and assign that template on a category by category basis through the "edit category" section of the Categories Setup.
Choosing yes will require the users to register and log in to contact the seller. This specific switch only affects the contact seller feature within the software. The browsing client must login to be able to click the contact seller link and send a message to the seller of the listing. This feature does NOT mask any fields within the listing details page until the browsing client logs in.
Choosing yes will require the users to register and log in to view the Listing Display Pages. They will still be able to browse the site's categories, but not view the Listing Display Page until they log in.
Feature added in Version 6.0
When a listing is placed, it records the language that is used by the seller at the time it is placed. That recording is done regardless of whether this setting is turned on or not. Now if you turn the setting on, it will filter out all listings(classifieds & auctions) that were placed using a different language5) than the currently selected language.
Note that for sites updating from versions before 6.0, the listing language for pre-existing listings(classifieds & auctions) will not be set. Those "older" listings(classifieds & auctions) placed before the update to version 6.0 will never be filtered by language, unless they are edited.
As of version 7.0.2 turning this setting on also affects search results, prior to this version search results showed listings from all languages regardless of what the setting is set to.
This setting is typically used for "directory" type sites. It allows you to specify the default order in which the classifieds are displayed while visitors are browsing categories. Normally, classifieds are displayed by "newest first" as a "default". However, this setting lets you specify the "title" for instance as the default sorting column for all listings(classifieds & auctions).

This determines what format numbers are displayed in. The American system uses a period to denote the decimal point and a comma to denote each multiple of 1000 in a number, while the European system uses a comma to denote a decimal and a period to denote each factor of 1000. The Japanese method uses no decimal point.
<tip c n>The format of prices displayed on the site can be further customized using the SMARTY system template found at geo_templates/[template_set]/system/classes/String/displayPrice.tpl (available in version 4.0.3+) See this tutorial for instructions on editing system templates like the one noted here.</tip>
This feature added in 5.0.0.
This setting will not apply when using Japanese number format, as with that format there are no "cents". If this setting is checked, any prices that do not have any cents, the cents will not be displayed. In other words, with it checked, cents will only show if there are cents to show.
Only Subscribed User can View or Bid on Listings (beta setting)
Choosing yes will require the users to have a subscription in order to view and bid on listings(classifieds & auctions).
<tip c w>IMPORTANT: Use this feature if your site is set up ONLY with Subscription-Based Price Plans. If you are using Fee-Based Price Plans you cannot use this feature. Your users that are in Fee-Based Price Plans will not be able to view or bid on listings(classifieds & auctions) if you check yes here.</tip>
This setting affects how phone numbers are formatted to support non-U.S. formats. This setting affects all 'phone number' settings on the site, including 'fax number' fields if used.
This settings allows you to choose how phone numbers are displayed on the site.
Expired listings(classifieds & auctions) older than the value you specify in this field will not appear on the user's Expired Listings page. Those listings(classifieds & auctions) will still be archived in the software's database, but they will not be viewable or accessible by the user.
Setting added in Version 7.3.0
If set to yes, this will hide any listings marked as sold from showing in any of the normal browsing locations. This includes browsing categories, browsing tags, search results, along with any modules that display listings.
Technically speaking, this adds a browsing and search filter to filter out all listings that are marked as sold.
Setting added in Version 7.3.0
This check-box will appear next to the Yes option in the Hide Listings marked Sold setting, if it is set to "yes". If this is checked, it will still show the listings marked as "sold" on the seller's other listings page.
