Geolocation Feature

This feature is an extension of the Geographic Navigation Addon feature and requires that addon to be in use before this feature can be used. This feature automatically sets the country level filter of the Geographic Navigation Addon when the client first visits your site.

Highlights of the Geolocation feature:

  • requires geographic navigation addon to operate
  • uses the IP of the client visiting the site to get the country of origin from an external source
  • requires standard accepted abbreviations be attached to all countries within the GEOGRAPHIC REGIONS > REGIONS admin tool so that data returned from the external source matches internal data. The countries that come with the software by default have the correct abbreviations/data to properly match the source for the ip data
  • uses the ip of the visiting client to attach a country level Geographic Navigation cookie on their browser
  • Once set the client can easily change that country browsing value through the Geographic Navigation addon "region choice" tools placed within your site
  • Only country level regions are set as regions/levels below that do not follow a standard in many countries, data do not match well in most countries to provide a fixed standard and ip location data below the country level isn't very accurate for many countries.
  • This feature requires a free API key with ipinfodb.com to work
  • this feature is technically in beta but has had extensive use in a few sites.
  • The cookie set is a Geographic Navigation feature cookie and so once set all features/tools of the Geographic Navigation addon will affect that cookie…like changing it to a subregion or completely different region
  • this feature essentially only does anything if a region cookie is not set for a specific client when they visit your site. This is usually only the first time they visit your site but if they clear their cookies on that browser or visit using a different browser with no Geographic Navigation cookies on it this feature will set one.

Where do you manage the geolocation feature?

Look to the following to turn on/off that feature:

ADDONS > GEOGRAPHIC NAVIGATION > SETTINGS > BETA / Experimental: Automatically assign visitors' regions based on their IPs

Once the above is checked you should see the following:

You'll need to setup an account with ipinfodb.com and insert the API key you get from them within the above noted field
