8) User Groups

Highlights of this feature:

  • Allows easy grouping of users to provide different pricing for different groups of users
  • Allows easy changing of pricing attached to a user group
  • Can have user group specific payment gateways to allow specific user groups access to more "privileged" payment choices
  • You can have user group specific fields that act much like category specific questions
  • You can also have user group specific field configurations just like category specific field configurations
  • You can set registration codes to allow clients to choose a user group at registration
  • You can attach multiple fee-based price plans to the same fee-based user group. These price plans would be choices for "pricing" at the front of every place a classified/place an auction process.
  • Control access to some client side administration features by user group
  • Group specific splash page after a user group is chosen. Would appear before the registration details collection page.
  • Group specific splash page before the first step in the place a listing process
  • Group specific "sponsored by" text that would appear in the listing details page of any user attached to a specific user group
  • You can set a few registration freebies at registration time per user group
  • You can set a default user group to register all users into and manually move them around after registration
  • Discount codes in the discount code addon can be user group specific
  • You can issue a site balance at registration by user group when the site account balance is installed and enabled
  • You can issue tokens at registration by user group when the tokens addon is installed and enabled.
  • Through the "attached price plans" feature you can attach multiple fee-based price plans to the same user group. The users in that user group would be able to choose the price plan they use when placing a listing. The pricing chosen this way only affects that specific listing placement process.

Where are User Groups Administered in the Software

The user group is admin tool is within the USERS/USER GROUP section of the admin tool. Look to the following path:

USERS / USER GROUPS > USER GROUPS HOME

You'll see a screen like this one:

Within that admin tool you'll see:

  1. The name of the user group
  2. the number of users currently attached to that user group
  3. the name of the classified price plan (if using GeoCore Max or GeoCore Classifieds versions). You can click on the price plan name to link directly to that price plans admin tool
  4. the name of the auction price plan (if using GeoCore Max or GeoCore Auctions versions). You can click on the price plan name to link directly to that price plans admin tool
  5. this column describes the default user group at registration. You can also set a user group to be automatically attached to a user that select "business" within the account type field at registration. You can set a different user group for the "personal" selection from that same field. You can set a user group specific field configuration within the LISTING SETUP > FIELDS TO USE admin tool. Just click the "change user group" button at the top of that page.
  6. This button allows you to move all users currently attached to that user group to another user group. You can move individual users from user group to user group in each users admin tool page.
  7. click this to see additional admin tools for that specific user group
  8. click this to delete a user group. If there are current users in that user group you will be asked which user group you wish to move them to. Note that you will not be able to delete the base user group that came with the software.

Things to Know When Configuring User Groups in the Software

  • To create more than one user group in the system you must first install and enable the Enterprise Pricing addon. Once enabled you'll see "add new user group" button in the user groups home admin tool.
  • Many clients inadvertently add user group specific field configurations when editing fields in the LISTING SETUP > FIELDS TO USE admin tool. If you find that suddenly no fields appear or your field configurations change when you login or logout of the software look to see if you have accidently done this.
  • You can't change the price plan specifically attached to a user. But you can manually change their user group attachment thus possibly changing the price plan attachment
  • You can move users in one user group to another user group manually in the admin tool
  • You must ALWAYS have a default user group that users will fall into if no registration code is used. It's actually hard not to have one. Please DO NOT circumvent this with direct modifications at the php or database level. Users without user groups become "persona non grata" within the software and cause a few malfuncitons
  • If creating a subscription based user group you can only attach a subscription based price plan to it and each of those subscription based price plan must have at least one subscription period attached to it.
  • Every user group must have a price plan attached.
  • If you don't want to use the registration code in your registration process to register users in specific user groups at registration you will need to remove ALL registration codes attached to any user group in your user group admin tool. If there is one user group with a registration code attached to it the "registration code form" will appear.
