Add New Category [S]

The highest level of category that you can add into the system is at the "main" level. When you click on the Categories link in the administration menu at the left of admin tool for the first time, you will see several system default categories. These are the "main" (or top) level categories, that are typically displayed on the very front page of your site. You can delete all of these initial categories, edit them and/or add your own or simply add to the current default list.

To add a new category at this level, click the "add a category to this level" link at the bottom of the page. To add a new category (child) to an existing category (parent), click the parent category's name in the list, and then the "add a category to this level" link at the bottom of that page.

Note that immediately after inserting a new category you are immediately placed IN that new category within the categories admin tool. If you needed to add another subcategory to the same parent category you will need to use the breadcrumb navigation at the top of that admin tool to get back to the parent category you wish to add the next subcategory to.

On the "Add New Category" page you will see several fields that are explained below:

Display Order

This is order in which the new category will be displayed relative to all other categories at this same level. If two categories have the same display order value in the same set of subcategories the order between "like" display order will then be set alphabetically. Thus if you wanted all subcategories of this specific parent category to display alphabetically you would set their display order to the same value.

For example: If you had two subcategories (of the same parent category) with category names like 'advertising' and 'banking' yet both had the same display order value then these two specific categories would appear alphabetically between them. Given the example below:

Category Name Display order
zoologist 10
banking 30
advertising 30
plumbing 20

Would actually appear in this order on the client side:

zoologist
plumbing
advertising
banking

<tip c n>If yon anticipate adding other categories in between the first categories you add you may consider "leaving space" between the display order values of the first categories you add. You could leave 5 (or any amount you feel the need to) values between one category to the next to allow space to insert other category (display order values) later like the example above.</tip>

URL of Category Icon

If you would like to display an icon (image) in front of this category's name, enter the absolute or relative path (URL) to that image in this field.

Display of this icon within category navigation can be controlled in a number of ways. Each category navigation module has its own specific control for this. So if you use two different category navigation modules around your site you could have one set to display category navigation icons while the other would not.

Listing Types Allowed

If you would like to limit this category to only "classified ads" or "auctions" listings, click the appropriate radio button. When a user attempts to list an item in this category, your choice here will be their only option. Otherwise, leave the default setting to allow both types of listings.

Category Name and Description

Type in the name of your category that will be displayed throughout your site. The category name you use here will be used on both the admin and client side. You also have the ability to give your category a description. The description is entirely optional. Display of this category description within category navigation can be controlled in a number of ways. Each category navigation module has its own specific control for this. So if you use two different category navigation modules around your site you could have one set to display category descriptions while the other would not. If you use the "non-module" category navigation the description like the category icon mentioned above will display on your site only if you have that switch set to "yes" on the following page:

SITE SETUP > BROWSING SETTINGS

<tip c n> IMPORTANT: If you are using a Category Navigation Modules to display your category navigation, each module has its own specific settings and should be manually adjusted to suit your needs. To do this, access the module you use in your design within the following admin section:

PAGE MODULES > BROWSING > CATEGORY NAVIGATION

To find any specific module you use on a certain page find the specific page that module appears on the PAGES MANGEMENT admin tool and click the name (or module placement tag) of the category navigation module you wish to edit and is attached to that page. You will be directed to that modules admin tool.</tip>
